In 1989, the firm’s Managing Immigration Attorney, Margaret Miller, received a Juris Doctor degree from U.C. Davis, School of Law with the top honor of Order of the Coif, having graduated in the top 10% of her law school class. She received numerous American Jurisprudence Awards. She graduated University in San Francisco with Magna Cum Laude honors in 1985. In 1989, Ms. Miller was admitted to the State Bar of California.

Former U.S. Immigration Officer

Margaret Miller, the firm’s Managing Immigration Lawyer, was admitted to practice law 30 years ago. She served as a U.S. CIS Immigration officer for nearly 10 years. She served as an Asylum Officer in the U.S. Immigration San Francisco Asylum Office and decided over 7000 asylum cases for the U.S. Immigration Service (INS / USCIS). She also decided Withholding of Deportation Cases, Stowaway Cases, and Work Authorization Applications. As a U.S. Immigration Officer and Asylum Officer she was responsible for deciding asylum cases in California, Washington, Oregon, Alaska and Hawaii. This included political asylum, asylum based on religion, FGM asylum, LGBT Asylum and other sensitive asylum cases.

As one of the first Asylum Officers in the U.S. government’s new Asylum program, Ms. Miller re-drafted the U.S. Government’s Operations Instructions which were then published and became formal policy for all of the Asylum Offices in the entire United States. Her decisions on asylum cases were used as training tools for Asylum Officers in every Asylum Office in the United States. She was given the authority to train new Asylum Officers who were then certified as Officers based solely on her training.

Immigration Lawyer Margaret Miller has lectured on Asylum Law and Asylum Practice at the Santa Clara University School of Law. She is preparing a lecture on asylum law practice for the U.C. Davis School of Law.

Prestigious Skadden Arps Fellowship

Margaret Miller, was awarded the prestigious Skadden Arps Fellowship from the #2 law firm in the United States. As a Skadden Fellow, Margaret represented immigrants and engaged in civil rights litigation. She worked as a Skadden Fellow Immigration Attorney at the International Institute of the East Bay (now the International Institute of the Bay Area).
